Panama provides various pathways to residency for foreign investors participating in government-certified reforestation projects, commonly known as “Green Investment Visas”. And higher-level investments even offer a fast track to permanent residency. Keep reading to discover the opportunities for investing in Panama’s reforestation projects and securing your residency!
Requirements to Qualify for a Reforestation Visa
To qualify, the investment must be made toward a reforestation project regulated by Panama´s Ministry of Environment (“MiAmbiente”). The type of residency granted will depend primarily on the amount of the investment:
- With a minimum investment of $80,000 USD qualifying applicants can obtain residency for up to 6 years.
- With a minimum investment of $100,000 USD qualifying applicants can initially obtain residency for 2 years, but are then eligible to apply for permanent residency.
- With a minimum investment of $350,000 USD qualifying applicants can directly obtain permanent residency through a fast-tracked process.
The $100,000 USD and the $350,000 USD minimum investments can be made in the applicant´s personal capacity or through a Panamanian company or foundation. And the investment must be maintained for a minimum period of 5 years to retain the permanent residency.
Residency for the Whole Family
Applicants who qualify can also obtain residency for their spouse or dependents with an additional investment of $2,000 USD for each additional applicant.
Impact of a Reforestation Visa on Local Economy and Environment
Panama’s Reforestation Visa programs have a positive impact on both the local economy and the environment. By requiring participants to invest in reforestation projects, these programs generate job opportunities and stimulate economic growth. Moreover, the reforestation efforts contribute to sustainable development and the preservation of Panama’s rich biodiversity.
Bottom line?
Frankly, if you are looking for residency via an investor visa, you’ll probably find more opportunities to invest in real estate or in a CD with a local bank to qualify for one of the other investor visas.
But for those looking to make an investment that will have a positive impact on Panama and the world, a qualifying “green investment” can offer an added benefit of 2-year, 6-year or even permanent residency in Panama through one of the Reforestation Visas. And some of the Reforestation Visas offer a significantly lower investment threshold than the other popular investor visas.
If this seems like it may be a good match for you and your family, then I would love to help you.
